We went with Emily on a tour of Underground Seattle. Seattle had all sorts of poor planning (or lack of planning) in its early days. Early Seattle was built on the tide flats originally, so anytime the tide came in the streets would flood. It was a blessing for almost everyone when a sawmill caught fire near the turn of the century and torched the whole city, giving a chance to rebuild. But not everyone was on the same page. City planners decided to fill in the tide flats and build the new streets above, but the city merchants didn't want to wait so built their shops below anyway. This resulted in an 8-30 foot drop between street and shops. There were problems with people being killed or seriously injured by barrels rolling off trucks to down below, or people simply falling off the streets, etc. Finally this problem was solved by building support beams from the streets to the second stories of the shops and paving over the gap. Thus what we now know as Underground Seattle was created. It was the stomping grounds of all sorts of scoundrels for many decades, but is now simply an historical tour. Although there are rumors of ghosts still being present.... Posted by Picasa
